Renewable Energy for Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa Chile 2017

Cost-efficient and environmentally friendly energy generation for remote locations with no access to the grid.

In 2013, German solar photovoltaic (PV) project developer and turnkey installer KRAFTWERK designed, engineered and constructed Tierra Hotels’ first PV plant – a 23 kWp PV-diesel hybrid system that has since been covering up to 50% of Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa’s daytime electricity needs and achieves ca. 15% annual diesel savings.

Shortly after, Tierra Hotels was named the Most Sustainable Tourism Company in Chile for its use of solar energy and organic architecture.

In 2017, KRAFTWERK and smart energy storage solutions provider QINOUS will expand the existing PV plant by an additional 133 kWp and implement a 335 kWh high-effi cient Lithium-Ion battery storage and energy management solution, allowing for the diesel generators to be completely switched off for 8 to 9 hours per day plus a few hours at night.

The expansion of the Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa’s PV plant was selected as a showcase installation. This project is part of the worldwide dena Renewable Energy Solutions Programme coordinated by Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) – the German Energy Agency – and co-fi nanced by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the German Energy Solutions Initiative.
